Summer is Here!

Summer is here.

Summer makes me happy.
All I want to do is take a little nappy.
The sun is shining hard down upon my face.
I really am so sleepy, I‘ll lay in a green space.
The earth is my own pillow it really is so soft.
All I want to do is snore in earth’s cozy loft.

When I Nearly Drowned

When I was three years old I almost drowned.  My family and I were swimming at my neighbor’s house.   My mom was on the side of the pool sitting at a table talking on the phone to my dad.  My sister was on the deep side of the pool.   I was all by myself on the small end and no one was watching me.
I had a blow up floatie frog around my waist that was open in the back.  I leaned back and fell out of my floatie.  I started kicking my legs and moving my hands trying to get up out of the water but I couldn’t.  My mom saw that I was about to drown and she dove in the water to save me.  I remember feeling my mom pull me up out of the water.  I could hear her say she was never going to leave me alone in the water again.
I am a good swimmer now, but I still don’t like being alone in the water.

The Nerve-racking Nutcracker

Last winter on a cold night I drove to Richmond, Kentucky with my mother and sister.  We were going to the Eastern Kentucky University Center for the Arts. This is where I would perform my very first ballet.
I was a nervous … I was a mess!! I was so worried, but at the same time, I was excited. The whole way there I was so afraid I was going to mess up.  I kept telling myself we have been working on this for 2 months.  Deep down I knew I was ready, but my nerves were getting the best of me.
“You can do this Zaida!” my mom said.  “I performed this very same ballet when I was your age.  You will be fine.”
I finally started to calm down just as we pulled up to the Center for the Arts.
When I got there, I went to the dressing room to get ready. I sat down at the mirror, and my mom started my makeup. First my eyeshadow then my lipstick and last a little blush. The costume designer walked into the dressing room and said it was time to go put our costumes on.  I dreaded getting in the costume.  I had only tried it on, but I knew it was very heavy and extremely hot.  There were many layers to the costume.  First the body suits, then a dress, on top of that a set of heavy wings and finally, a halo on my head.  It took about 15-20 minutes to get into full costume.
After a little while, it was time for my act. I walked out on to the stage, I smelled peppermint.  I remembered part of the set was large wooden candy canes that had been sprayed with a peppermint scent so the dancers would not smell wood.  It made me think of Christmas time.  I wondered of the audience could smell it too.
As I started my dance, I saw lots of eyes staring.  It made me feel nervous again.  I tried to focus on the music, but for a minute, my mind was blank!!   I glanced over at the other dancers, and suddenly, all the moves came back to me.  I was so relieved; I must have had a huge smile on my face.  And just like that—it was over.
When I walked off stage, I felt like I would burst with happiness.  I will never forget my first dance performance of The Nutcracker.

Basketball Whoa Hoo!

The night of my first basketball game, in my whole entire life, I was so excited!! It started out so good, but there was a big trouble. It was the 4th period of the game. There was 20 seconds left. The score was 11 to 12. It was the other team’s ball. We were all running towards the other side of the court ready to defend the ball. We raised our arm high up in the air. The big crowd shouted “defense! Defense! DEFENSE!” My team started to go up to get the ball. I was the only one who was in position when the other team threw the ball to their team mates and started running towards me. Now I was the only one who could stop him.

I was frightened. What I should do, oh what should I do?

Just then I heard the crowd say “Stop him! Block him!”

I thought for a second. That’s it! I will block him!

While he was coming, I was remembering why I got in basketball in the first place. When I was 8years old watching a basketball game for the 2012’s champion ship between Kentucky and some other team. After final game was finished, I thought doing basketball was awesome. That’s why I started basketball.

I started to think that I could do this. I stared at the ball for 3 seconds then I got ready and I jumped up and swatted the ball out of his hands.

I did it! I blocked him! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Just then the buzzer went off. We won we won by 1 point. I high-fived my team mates and we all shouted “YYYEEESSSS!!!!!!!!!!”

I will never forget my first basketball game.
